US money market fund assets increase to record $5.7tn

The US, UK, and Russia abstained from voting on a successful UN Security Council resolution on Wednesday, which called for “urgent and extended” humanitarian pauses in the Gaza Strip.

The resolution, sponsored by Malta, does not mention a ceasefire, and softened language from a previous draft, turning a “demand” for pauses into a “call”.

The 12 remaining members of the council voted in favour, adopting the first resolution related to the war between Israel and Hamas. Four earlier attempts at a resolution had failed.

The UK’s mission to the UN said it abstained from the vote because the resolution “could not clearly condemn Hamas’s terrorist attacks of 7 October”.
